FOTO FRIDAY: THE CANALS OF AMSTERDAM

Every Friday I’ll be sharing a photo from someplace in my travels.

This week’s photo is of the canals of Amsterdam.

One of the signature features of Amsterdam is the maze of canals branching out throughout the city. While strolling along the water and passing over ornate bridges was enjoyable, I didn’t find them that picturesque. The water was a bit dirty and the streets crowded with tourists; however, my favorite part of the canals were all of the cute Dutch houses lining it.

Many of these houses were hundreds of years old even though they might not look it from first glance. Tall and very narrow, if you looked hard enough you’d begin to notice that half of them look like they’re leaning or about to fall into the canal. I loved the decorative roofs with the stepped or bell-curved gables and the colors. To me, this was the epitome of the Netherlands, and although I wouldn’t want to live in one of these Dutch houses, I loved seeing them daily during our time in Amsterdam.
